Hello everyone! (and passers by)
I am looking into creating another competition somewhere within the next month (in between my assignments and prac work)
It looks like it may be held around the 13th of August to the 8th of September, but these dates are not final!

This upcoming contest comes with a surprise! I won't share it just yet but it means you're gonna have to compete harder ;)

I am wanting to know what you guys might be interested in regarding the theme (please comment)

What composition rules should we focus on?

:bulletpink: Rules of Thirds
:bulletpink: Focus/depth/blur
:bulletpink: Lines and geometry
:bulletpink: Colour/Monochromatic
:bulletpink: Other (comment!)

What categories are you interested in competing for?

:bulletpink: Still Life
:bulletpink: Staged photography
:bulletpink: Conceptual/narrative
:bulletpink: Architecture

:bulletpink:  etc.etc. mentions your ideas or what you'd like to do!

This contest is gonna be huge so choose creatively! ;)

I'd also like to take this advantage >.> to remind you that PhotoUnited has a donation page, these donations go directly toward prizes of these contests! Please consider :) 1 or 2 points means a lot. photounited-points.deviantart.…
If!! you donate points, please let me know in a note (when you send them) that you are donating for the competition!
Hey everyone!
Would you like it if I started a facebook page (called PhotoUnited) to go alongside this group?
It would include additional features of member's submissions (from the gallery on here and much more regularly). But if we go ahead with this, I will need permission to re-upload people's photos!
I could also post additional links to youtube videos, share inspiration, tips, blogs etc.

Who's interested?

Let's get a conversation going among our members!
What sort of photography inspires or catches your eye the most? Comment below your favourite categories or styles of photography and tell us why you like it and how it interests you. Examples are nature, landscape, people photography, heavily edited photos, aim and shoot photos, film, colours, shapes, conceptual etc.

Also remember there are still some points up for grabs if you see our last journal fav.me/dbb5aob

Happy snapping :camera:
This journal is part of the PhotoUnited's new Feedback Folder project so that everyone who has submitted can have a bigger public platform for their work to be appreciated and analysed.
I'm going to keep these journals without "artspeak", keeping points brief and concise so that it is an easy-to-understand educational tool.

Disclaimer: No negative critiques given are insults or discouragement to the photographer. All photographers and artists are encouraged to consider the points given and to experiment more with their work. Each piece will be fairly given 2 pros (positives) and 2 cons (negatives).

For information on how to win points, see bottom of journal

Magic Trumpet by photorip
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108 Pro: Good composition - well balance between pink and green, and flowers look more effective when they are not taking up the entire frame
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Good detail picked up by camera, i.e. water droplets and flower spots create depth and texture.
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Image is quite dull, needs more contrast and vibrancy
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Composition might have worked better if the bottom 2 flowers were not cut-off.

:thumb682074652:
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Vibrant colours are eye catching and not too saturated.
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Slight vignette works in favour of the image as it adds depth to the perspective.
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Confusing focal point, is it the plant or the sun? (Perhaps if sun was behind the plant, would be more interesting)
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Photo could work better in a small frame, either more close up, or a different shape, like a square, to cut off the left and right panes which distract from the centre.

:thumb624515091:
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Effective composition - different heights of buildings, different shapes, different sizes of boats
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Minimal colour palette works well
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Highlights and midlights could be made brighter
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Clarity is lost a little bit on the architectural features

:thumb678983296:
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Effective lighting, good balance of light and dark
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Composition using square format is well balance, two focus points (girl and window) but both separated, complimenting each other
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Clarity is a bit low and grainy
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Midlights and lowlights are very close together, more contrast between those values would the image look less flat.

Helena 01 by MilenasLens
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: If going for a surreal styling, the work succeeds, as the model's lighting does not match that of the background
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Very good clarity on the model (i.e skin and facial features)
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: It does look unnatural, some areas are very very dark and some highlighted areas on model's face are either too bright or have changed colour (?)
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Photo may have worked better in a Portrait orientation

Ackerhummel I (Bombus pascuorum) by paschlewwer
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Good capture of movement
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Overall clarity and depth of field (focus/blur) is clean.
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: The front row of bulbs (flowers) needs more contrast and saturation. It is a dull part of the photo.
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: The frame could have been cropped on the right, to remove the twig and leaf that is partially shown. (Less is more)

Fugacity by paschlewwer
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Hard to fault this photo, very clean lighting
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Minimal composition is very effective
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: The gradient from left to right (where the leftest edge is much darker) is distracting from the rest of the image. Continual brightness would balance the image.
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: The vertical space of table beneath the petals and vase could be left longer (taller). At the moment those focus objects look cramped against the bottom frame.

Half and Half by SchroSurgeon
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Lighting is bright and clear
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Pro: Interesting focal point - unusual fungus
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: There is a lot of information in the frame, try to limit what is in the image or create more blur (Less is more)
Bullet Point Circle Pattern - Blue by Silvertail108Con: Possibly a closer angle would achieve more focus on the fungus.

These works will remain in the Feedback Folder for about another week, then I will remove them (so that the folder never gets overcrowded).
